چکیده

We construct a composite quasar spectrum from 284 HST FOS spectra of 101 quasars with redshifts z > 0.33. The spectrum covers the wavelengths between 350 Å and 3000 Å in the rest frame, with a peak S/N level of ∼ 130 per Å at ∼ 1200 Å. Since ∼ 90% of the sample quasars have redshift z < 1.5, the spectrum is suitable for studying the wavelength region shortward of Lyα without large effects from intervening Lyα forest absorption. Data in the waveband between 350 Å and 600 Å are mainly from the spectra of z > 1.5 quasars, for which significant corrections for the accumulated Lyman–series line and continuum absorption have been applied. There is a significant steepening of the continuum slope around 1050 Å. The continuum between 1050 Å and 2200 Å can be modeled as a power law fν ∝ ν α with α = −0.99 ± 0.05. For the full sample the power–law index in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) between 350 Å and 1050 Å is α = −1.96± 0.15. For the radio–loud subsample (60 objects), the EUV spectral index is α ' −2.2, while for the radio–quiet subsample (41 objects) it is α ' −1.8. The continuum flux in the wavelengths near the Lyman limit shows a depression of ∼ 10%. The break in the power–law index and the slight depression of the continuum near the Lyman limit are features expected in Comptonized accretion–disk spectra. Comptonization produces a power–law tail in the wavelength band shortward of ∼ 1000 Å and smears out the Lyman–limit edge of the intrinsic accretion–disk spectrum. In the EUV waveband, we detect several possible emission features, including one around 690 Å that may be O iii+N iii produced by the Bowen fluorescence effect. Comparing our composite spectrum with one made at higher redshifts by Francis et al. (1991), we find that the equivalent widths of Lyα and high–ionization emission lines are larger in our sample, reflecting a known luminosity dependence. The equivalent Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS5–26555.

No Evidence of ‘gray’ Dust from Composite Quasar Spectra

Two recent studies based on composite reddened quasar spectra have indicated the presence of ‘gray’ dust in quasar environments. This gray dust has a relatively flat extinction law in the UV, consistent with the theoretical expectation of a lack of small dust grains close to a quasar. In contrast, individual reddened quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey tend to have steep extinction laws in ...

Luminous Quasars in Luminous Early-Type Host Galaxies

Some recent observations of nearby quasars with HST have apparently failed to detect host galaxies. We review the HST observations as well as near infrared ground-based observations of the same objects. We nd that the quasar hosts can be detected in the HST data if they are smoothed suuciently to reveal low surface brightness. The smooth hosts are very diicult to detect with HST but are more ea...

v 1 2 7 A pr 1 99 7 Do the Broad Emission Line Clouds See the Same Continuum that We See ?

Recent observations of quasars, Mrk 335 and the HST quasar composite spectrum, have indicated that many of them have remarkably soft ionizing continua (fν ∝ ν , 13.6 eV – 100 eV). We point out that the number of hν > 54.4 eV photons is insufficient to create the observed strengths of the He ii emission lines. While the numbers of photons which energize C iv λ1549 and Ovi λ1034 are sufficient, e...

Ultraviolet and Optical Properties of Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are remarkable for their extreme continuum and emission line properties which are not well understood. New results bearing on the spectroscopic characteristics of these objects are presented here, with the aim of establishing their typical ultraviolet (UV) and optical spectral behavior. We employ Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of 22 NLS1s, which ...
